Chapter 28

The brothers were excited. Joshua Tanaka was coming up the road from Cedar Park in a flashy red sports car. The security cameras caught glimpses of him as he careered round hairpin bends and sped towards the Meditation Centre.

Matthew leant towards the video screen.

'He's driving like it's a racing car.'

'It is a racing car,' Jim said. It's a Lamborghini.'

'How do you know?'

'I intend to own one.'

Yuki wondered if Jim could drive. She suspected he couldn't. The Meditation Centre's impressive security system wasn't just to keep people out. The brothers were prisoners on the mountain. Jim had told her that he escaped once and got as far as Port Douglas but he didn't like it and came back.

The Lamborghini entered the grounds and drove past the student dormitories to the Chinese temple where it parked beside a large bronze lion. Joshua grabbed a briefcase from the passenger seat and got out.

'Mr Tanaka is going to Sam's cottage,' Mark whispered. 'I've got it fully bugged. We'll be able to see them as well as hear what they say.'

He flicked a switch and the scene changed. Yuki saw the top of Sam's baldhead. Then the screen went crazy. When it settled down, Sam was in his rocking chair talking to a smartly dressed man with a face that looked as if it had undergone expensive surgery and still needed more.

She had no difficulty distinguishing Sam's plummy tones from Joshua Tanaka's North American twang. It soon became evident that he shared the brothers' dislike of Professor Steinfeld. But it went much further than that. Joshua was worried about the treatment he was receiving.

Sam didn't share his concern. He rocked back and forth in his chair and made soothing remarks about Joshua's appearance.

'She says you are growing more pubic hair.'

'Yeah ...' Joshua sounded embarrassed.

'And associated parts are getting bigger?'

'That is the case.'

'As I understand it, your development was stunted when you set yourself alight as a child. Professor Steinfeld informs me that her treatment is designed to remedy that. She says you are experiencing a second puberty.'

'Yeah. She's probably right but that's not the point.'

'What is the point?'

Joshua fidgeted awkwardly.

'I don't trust that dame.'

'Don't trust her?'

'No. She's such a bitch and a loony.'

'But you must agree that you are looking much better.'

'So are those pandas.'

'Pandas?' Sam seemed to miss the point.

'I'm talking about that fertility program.'

'Oh, that ... I understand it has been most successful.'

'Yeah. I'm not disputing that. She's got 'em to breed in captivity. Pandas are shy breeders so she spliced in a bit of rabbit. I want to know what she's been splicing into me.'

'Her assistants inform me that they're using genetic material from one of your embryonic clones,' Sam smiled benignly. 'You are being gene-spliced with your younger self.'

'I know about that, Sam. I just wanna be sure there's not more to it.'

'The ultimate aim is to live for two hundred years.'

'Yeah. But what if you end up as a two-hundred-year-old rabbit?'

'That is surely not a serious concern.'

'Sam. As I understand this gene-splicing thing .
